Performed by an all Asian Canadian cast, HUMAN is a dance-theatre work exploring memory, emotion, instinct, and conscious choice. Blending movement, voice, and theatrical imagery, the work examines how humans navigate life through both personal and collective experiences. The piece invites audiences to observe humanity from a wider perspective, questioning what shapes the way we live and connect with one another. HUMAN is both intimate and universal, revealing the beauty, complexity, and vulnerability of being human.

HUMAN BODY EXPRESSION

Dora Award-winning choreographer Hanna Kiel (길현아) was born in Seoul, South Korea, and relocated to Canada in 1996. Since moving to Toronto in 2008, she has created works for numerous companies and institutions including The National Ballet of Canada, Toronto Dance Theatre, Ballet Jörgen, ProArteDanza, Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, and Dusk Dances, while also collaborating in theatre with companies such as Tarragon Theatre, Theatre Passe Muraille, and Centaur Theatre. In 2012, Hanna won Northwest Dance Project’s international choreographic competition Pretty Creatives and later served as an E-choreographer for Springboard Danse Montréal. She is the founder and artistic director of Human Body Expression (HBE), a Toronto-based contemporary dance company recognized for its emotionally charged and genre-defying performances.

Ryan Lee (he/him) is a dance artist whose versatile roles encompass choreographer, interpreter, rehearsal director, educator, and mentor.  A graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University (BFA), he has been fortunate to have collaborated with a beautiful range of respectable choreographers and companies across Canada and has toured internationally.  Ryan's choreographic work has been presented at notable festivals and created commissioned works for numerous institutions and training programs across Canada.  Ryan has been working with Human Body Expression since 2014 as an interpreter and will now take on the role of co-creator for the company’s upcoming project, Human.

Aaron Jan is a director, dramaturg and playwright who has directed over 35 productions across Canada. He has worked as a creator with Factory Theatre, Canadian Stage, Native Earth Performing Arts, Theatre Aquarius, fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre, Boca Del Lupo, the Capitol Theatre, and most recently with Soulpepper and Adam Blanshay Productions' US National Tour of Kim's Convenience. He is the 2019 winner of the Ken McDougall directing award, the 2021 co-winner of the Rita Joe Playwriting Award, a 2021 co-recipient of Musical Stage Company's Aubrey and Marla Dan Fund for New Musicals, a 2021 Johanna Protege Recipient, and the 2022 winner of Tarragon Theatre's Urjo Kareda Award for Emerging Artists. This is his fourth collaboration with Hanna Kiel.

ARCHITECTURE OF VIOLENCE
